(PLTM) - Joyce Samuel Primary School has once again won the primary school of the year award, while the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) won school of the year in the secondary division, during the annual Virgin Islands Stars in Education Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception.

During the annual event, held at Tortola Pier Park on Saturday, April 21, teachers were celebrated for their exemplary work over the last year and especially after the September storms.

Principal of Althea Scatliffe Primary School, Ms. Marieta Headley was awarded principal of the year for the primary division and Mrs. Sandy Underhill, principal of ESHS won principal of the year for the secondary division.

“Six years ago, I started the Virgin Islands Stars in Education Awards to recognise the hard work of our educators and to celebrate our accomplishments in the Ministry,” Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture said during his remarks.

He said that this year was the most meaningful, particularly because of the dedication to the profession that was shown by educators after the hurricanes.

“As Minister, I have a new found admiration and respect for each and everyone of you. I saw your dedication, your hard work and commitment to this Territory, and in particular our students first hand following the hurricanes, as you were all eager to work with us in the Ministry to get schools opened,” he told educators.

Minister Walwyn said that he saw teachers who became janitors, construction workers, garbage collectors— teachers who just did whatever needed to be done to get their schools ready within the timeline that was given.
