Long awaited works have commenced in an effort to address the road erosion issues which affect residents at the Louis Turnbull apartment building at Johnson's Ghut and motorists using the road which leads to Long Trench.
Government is building a retaining wall to buttress the road structure, something the owner and occupants of the apartment building have been asking for over several years.
On most occasions when it rains heavily, the road becomes undermined due to gushing water, debris and sediments that flow from the top of the hill.
Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool explained that the project which also includes repairing the undermined surface, is one of the priority areas identified as part of $15M Caribbean Development Bank [CDB] loan. He explained that Government recognized the urgent attention needed in the area ahead of the rainy season.
"We haven't really launched that programme [$15M CDB loan projects] as yet; we intend to do it at the end of this month, but we as a Government decided to begin the project because of the time of the year when we don't want to let it happen again. So, it has been a major priority and we have been planning it for a while... So we are building a wall there to protect Louis Turnbull's apartment. You know the last major flood affected her in a major way and when we are finished that, we are going to fix the road that is in the area," he outlined.
Minister Vanterpool said the amount to build the wall was initially $203,000.00, but the new Government has reduced the cost of the project.
"The plans that I met in front of me, it was a little too expensive so we reviewed the plans and we now have a new plan where instead of costing $203,000, it is costing around $97,000.00," he stated.
Following the September 2010 floods, Louis Turnbull said she had suggested to former 6th District Representative, Omar Hodge, that they tilt the road to allow water to drain on the opposite side of her apartment.
