After completing counseling at the Sandy Lane Centre in relation to drug possession, two young persons got lucky when the Magistrate ordered a complete discharge. They were charged with unlawful possession of cannabis.
Travis Gumbs, 20 and Shakeema Lloyd, 19, reappeared in court last Friday before Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens after successfully completing their treatment at the centre.
They were both ordered to undergo treatment for drug abuse at the centre for three months and early last week, they tested for drugs in their system and the results were negative.
Magistrate Stephens, who gave both Gumbs and Lloyd a stern warning, said that upon conviction they will receive a Police record. She said the record will hamper their future, especially Lloyd who intends to pursue a career as a chef by attending the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
In relation to Gumbs, the Magistrate said it is not good for a young man to have a conviction record.
The Magistrate stated that she will give them a chance since they have tried and promised to give up smoking. They were told that it is now up to them to choose whether to mess up again or pursue positive things in life.
Lloyd is a student at the Technical Vocational School in Baughers Bay and intends to pursue her studies at the HLSCC, while Gumbs works at the BVI Electricity Corporation.
This was the first offence for both Gumbs and Lloyd.
