Horses in today's feature race at the Ellis Thomas Downs will compete for a larger purse following an announcement by Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn that the purse will be increased from $5,000 to $10,000 with Government's support.
The race will see two-time Governor's Cup winner, the BVI's Good Prospecting of Top Priority Stables battle against Really Up Town of the L&B Racing Stables and St. Thomas' Bud White and Sweet Sight.
Violet 'Letty' Hodge of L&B Stables told Lesmore Smith of Top Priority Stables that the only time he will see her horse is at the gates. However, Smith responded that Hodge will meet him at the winner's circle.
Hodge pointed out that the race is 7 Furlongs, a much faster race than what Good Prospecting ran on St. Thomas to win the Governor's Cup.
During a celebration party for local horses that have done well so far for the year, Minister Walwyn said that Government is committed to the sport and will work with the BVI Horse Owners Association to improve the facilities.
The Minister spoke about the improvements to the vending area which was completed within one week prior to the first leg of the Triple Crown which was held at the Downs.
