(PLTM) - GIS - Director to Waste Management, Mr. Marcus Solomon has praised the efforts of the Virgin Islands community for its contribution to the recycling programme.

Mr. Solomon said 46 bales of plastics were exported to Honduras during this month for recycling which shows that the community diverted almost 700,000 plastic bottles away from our waste stream.

The director said the concept of recycling is relatively new to the Virgin Islands and that it is was a pleasure to see that the programme is growing and the positive response the department is receiving.

Mr. Solomon said, “I want to take this time to encourage persons who are not recycling to start today. It is easy start with separating your plastics and glass. You can also compost your organic waste. When you are ready drop off your plastics or glass at any or our conveniently located recycling stations throughout the Territory.”

Mr. Solomon said businesses can take their recyclables in the case of plastics directly to Paraquita Bay or and their glass to Pockwood Pond. He added that the ‘We Recycle programme’ is a wonderful programme and is urging everyone to use it and do their part to keep the Virgin Islands clean and green.

The schedule days for the collection of recycling bins are as follows:

1. Virgin Gorda – Monday, Wednesday and Friday

2. Jost Van Dyke – Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday

3. Tortola – daily

The Ministry of Health and the Department of Waste Management is committed to collaborating with partners to strengthen and establish the necessary legislation to support a strong Waste Management System that focuses on a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle approach.
