The Vulnerable Needs Representation

(PLTM) - The BVI Government and society need to pay attention to the needs of the vulnerable sections of society, such as those suffering from disabilities, women, children and the elderly.

This was the assessment of Mrs. Shereen Flax-Charles, who is seeking to represent the Territory as an At Large candidate with the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in the upcoming General Election.

Equality, she said, is one of her focal points. She declared this during the launch of the VIP’s At Large candidates on Wednesday, January 16 at Maria’s by the Sea.

“I want speak about something that is very important to me, which is leveling the playing field for and providing equal opportunity for all,” she stated.

She went on to encourage voters to support her by saying, “If you know me, I have a reputation as a fighter, being bold, and not afraid to take on challenges, but I want to put all of those qualities to work for those in the Virgin Islands.”

Those, she said, “that may not have a voice, or may feel left out, especially our children, elderly, those with special needs and the disabled. It is widely said that you can judge the quality of a society by how it treats the least fortunate amongst them.” “For far too long, we make policies that affect everyone living here, but are not mindful and considerate of our elderly, our children, those with special needs and the disabled,” she stressed.

She went on to say, “It is almost like we toss them on the side, hoping that they somehow disappear. We can not afford to do this! If we are truly to be a community that is progressive, we need to be considerate of the needs of these segments in our community in any major policy initiatives.”

“It is about time that someone speak up for those who may not have a voice in this community,” she declared, pledging, “I am willing to be that voice, and their champion, their advocate. As we move this country in one direction forward, everyone must be on board. We cannot forget anyone, because a rising tide lifts all boats.”
