(PLTM) - The challenges for all Premier hopefuls to take part in a debate ahead of the general election, and for Hon. Andrew Fahie to run At-Large, are distractions. This is according to Hon. Fahie, who said he will ignore the comments by the National Democratic Party (NDP) Chairman, Hon. Myron Walwyn.

“I intend to remain laser focused on providing the people of the Virgin Islands with solutions that will adequately address the many issues plaguing our Virgin Islands. In so doing, I will ignore these weapons of mass distraction,” Hon. Fahie told BVI Platinum News yesterday, January 17.

Speaking at a pep rally held on Virgin Gorda on Wednesday, Hon. Walwyn, who is an At-Large Representative, challenged Hon. Fahie to find another candidate to contest in the First District and run At-Large.

“Why should you be elected by 400 (persons) and want to call the shots for 15,000. So, if you want accountability, good governance in your Premier, the Premier must be accountable to every single voter in the country. So, I issue a challenge to my opponent (Hon. Fahie) tonight, put somebody to run in the First [District] and meet me at the At-Large arena,” Hon. Walwyn said.

He also said that this election is about leadership and all the candidates contesting to become Premier should take part in a debate.

The other Premier hopefuls are Hon. Ronnie Skelton of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), who is running At-Large; and Hon. Julian Fraser of Progressives United (PU), who is running in the Third District. Efforts to obtain a comment from both leaders were unsuccessful.

However, previously, Hon. Fraser had commented on the At-Large challenge.

“In this Territory’s 46 years of Ministerial Government, it has had 5 different leaders and only one was from the At-Large side of the spectrum, serving in 3 of the last 4 terms. Currently, the Territory is being led by an At-Large Member and I’m sure most reasonable thinking persons would agree with me that this is the worst off the Territory has ever been," Hon. Fraser told BVI Platinum News.

He said the challenge by Walwyn is flawed.

“His contention that it’s the only true barometer by which to measure whether the people wants you to lead is flawed, in that those very people have chosen to be governed under the Westminster Parliamentary System, and that’s the method by which we select our leader, which is the same everywhere this system is practiced," the PU leader said.
