(PLTM) - Clocking in more than a year behind schedule, the Nurse Iris O’Neal clinic is still geared for a December opening, even though Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon. Ronnie Skelton admitted that some things might not be in place at the time of the opening.

During the Other Business segment of the August 14 House of Assembly sitting, Hon. Skelton announced that there is a possibility that the mini hospital would not have all that it needs when it finally opens in a few months.

“…We look forward to the Nurse Iris O’Neal clinic being opened in December, I think that’s what we are heading for. No everything would not be complete…But it is important for us to understand that we must continue to build the healthcare system of the country.”

In June this year the Ministry of Health announced that work on the Nurse Iris O’Neal Medical clinic is progressing well. The report indicated that the internal partition -- of the interior wall frames are about 95 percent completed. Additionally, electrical and plumbing works were also said to be 50 percent complete.

The ground breaking ceremony for the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic took place on 30 March, 2015 and since that time there has been multiple opening dates and promises of close-to-completion.

Back in April while making his contribution to the Budget Debate Ninth District Representative, Dr. the Hon. Hubert O’Neal was confident that the project, which was not affected by the hurricanes and has been dragging for three years would be completed by year end.

In announcing that this was the last lap to completion Hon. O’Neal said: “I am so pleased to see that the money to finish the Iris O’Neal health center is in place; as you know the building itself was quite advance before the storm and the structure itself didn’t suffer any damage…The Minister has assured me that it is scheduled to finish some time by December this year.”

“I look forward to that day when we can cut the ribbon and open that new facility. The people of Virgin Gorda would be very pleased that they would have a facility now – a 24 hour seven days a week facility where they can access healthcare; and not have to skip down to Road Town to the main public hospital for every little thing,” he added.

Originally construction for the clinic was expected to only take 12-months. The starting cost of the project was $6.5M.
