(PLTM) - Government campaigned on the promise of a National Pension Plan, and Premier and Minister for Finance, Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith announced that he is interested in seeing such a program materialize before he exits the political scene.

Premier Smith announced on June 19 that he would not be contesting the upcoming general elections, and he has already handed over the leadership baton of the National Democratic Party. However, Hon. Smith told reports at a press briefing that before his premiership ends, he hopes to see a pension plan.

Hon. Smith said, “One of the things that I am interested in really is looking at the whole national pension and this is something we have been talking about now for several years, and we are going to push on with it.”

“We did the National Insurance Policy couple of years ago—that was something that was really helpful and would be able to help people of this Territory, and I think the National Pension Program is something that will be also very, very important,” the Premier explained.

During the government’s swearing-in ceremony on June 23, 2015, Premier Smith indicated that the pension plan was in its final stages.

"I will finally put in place that pension program that we spoke about for some time. It is just because all of the background work has been done, and it is important because I know that there are many people who, because of the nature of their work, when it is time to retire the retirement allowances that they have is not really sufficient," Hon. Smith stated.

"With the pension program that I have spoken about, everybody will be able to retire and rest assured with the knowledge that that safety blanket will be there,” the Premier added.
