(PLTM) - The United Kingdom (UK) government has donated several new heavy-duty vehicles including trucks and backhoes to the Public Works Department (PWD) to help with the ongoing clean up exercise.

Governor Gus Jaspert handed over the keys to Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr D. Orlando Smith at a brief ceremony held today, April 24.

He said that, the donation is part of continued support from the UK which has been huge immediately after the hurricanes.

"Today is about support to the Public Works Department and another gift from the UK tax payers' to the BVI. A range of trucks and equipment to help clear debris and sewerage and help support the islands during recovery," the Governor said.

Premier Smith said that he is thankful for the UK's support, "I think the support has been critical."

He also mentioned the support in grants to help rebuild the infrastructure.

Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Minister of Communications and Works said that the equipment will help to increase the PWD capacity.

"..To do what they have to do in terms of cleaning the ghuts...to do what they have to do as they prepare for another hurricane season and also with rebuilding the territory," the Minister said.

He also said that the equipment will be spread across the sister islands and will also be shared with other ministries and the Solid Waste Department.
