(PLTM) - The government has dispelled what it calls rumours that public servants are being laid off as part of the recovery process of the Territory.

In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, March 16, government said that it is aware of erroneous misinformation that is being circulated by some persons through different media regarding the Public Service.

“The public is advised that the Government of the Virgin Islands has not sanctioned the removal of any person nor has it cut any department within the Public Service, as irresponsibly communicated by others,” according to the statement.

During a radio programme last Thursday, former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority, Mr. Claude Skelton Cline insinuated that under the proposed United Kingdom’s framework for the BVI, government will have to downsize the Public Service. This, he claimed, will see a number of BVIslanders being without jobs.

However, government in its statement said, “Overall, public officers are being encouraged to continue making significant contributions to the Public Service and the Territory by demonstrating ingenuity and professional strength, as we collectively build the BVI stronger, smarter, greener and better.”

Government’s statement was focused on the present, but Mr. Skelton Cline’s claims were more futuristic.

This is not the first time that government had to fight off claims of possible job cuts in the Public Service.

Immediately following the passage of the hurricanes in September, several political observers said that the government will be forced to lay off some of the public servants.
