Put Down The Guns: Walwyn, Young Men Make Special Appeal

In wake of the recent spate of gun related crimes, some young men in the community and Hon. Myron Walwyn, have come together to make a special appeal for persons to put down the guns.

The widely circulated four-minute video was released by Hon. Walwyn, Minister of Education and Youth Affairs.

"I am pleading with you to stop the gun violence. There are other ways in which we young people can resolve our problems; let we talk it out, let we reason, let we come to an understanding," said Mustafa Claxton, known as Musa.

The young man also pleaded with the older generation to return to the days when a village raised a child.

"I am also asking the old heads in the community to reach out to the community, especially those who are at-risk. The saying always goes, it takes a village to raise a child."

Musa added, "Somewhere along the journey, this practice disappeared and we need it back. Parents cannot do it on their own, teachers cannot do it on their own…Put away your guns."

Minister Walwyn said that only God can take life.

"We were all taught, whether at home or at school, or somewhere in the community, that life is previous. God is the giver of life and he should be the only person taking life."

He continued, "Whatever differences that might exist between us as a people, we must find a civilize way to deal with them. Killing another human being is not an option and should never be an option."

The At-Large Representative, who also shares the view that a community effort is needed in the fight against crime, reminded persons of the negative impact crime has on a country's economy.

He mentioned the Fountain Valley Golf Course massacre on neighboring St. Croix, which left eight tourists and staff dead, and others injured.

"St. Croix, a once vibrant tourist destination is today still struggling to attract cruise lines and other sectors in the tourist market. Let this not become our reality," Minister Walwyn lamented.
