(PLTM) - The building which housed the Enis Adams Primary School in Meyers Estate, has been torn down as government and donor, Mr. Peter Haycraft, move to fast track the rebuilding of the school. The school was damaged during the passage of the storm in September.

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture said that the proposed plan will see a bigger school with an additional storey at the top of the new building.

Mr. Haycraft of Road Town Wholesale Co. Ltd., had initially pledged $1M towards the rebuilding of the school, but has since added an additional $200,000.

Minister Walwyn explained to BVI Platinum News that the additional money will go towards building the extra space to address any issues of accommodation. But government will carry out the remaining works later to allow for the space to be occupied.

“Based on the design of the building and the discussions that we have had, the money that is being put in by Mr. Haycraft will bring the building at least to completion for the population that is there.”

He continued, “There is some additional space that we negotiated or discussed with them that we would like to have in the school, that would not be the Haycrafts’ responsibility, but we want to build it out as the population of the school increases.”

The Minister made it clear that the monies donated by Mr. Haycraft will not be handled by the government.

“They don’t bring the money to us…The relationship is between Mr. Haycraft and the contractor, not between us…The only thing he has said is that he is prepared to go as far as $1.2M on the project.”

He added, “So the building will have an empty space, more than likely on the top of it…And the design is going to be different.”

They are also proposing a courtyard type area on the compound.

Minister Walwyn and Hon. Melvin Mitch Turnbull, Second District Representative, will be holding a community meeting tomorrow, January 16 at 5:00 pm at the Althea Scatliffe Primary to present and discuss the proposed plan for the new school.
