(PLTM) - Amid news of a number of layoffs being executed by companies affected by Hurricane Irma, law firm Harneys has stated that the company has not announced any redundancies in recent weeks.

Information reaching our news team is that Harneys was among the large companies that laid off individuals last week. Reports are that the company sent home a number of individuals in its finance department.

However, a spokesperson for the company told BVI Platinum News, "There have been no new redundancies at Harneys. In fact, more than half of the 18 staff members affected by the temporary redundancies announced in September have now been recalled to full-time work."

Harney is one of the largest law firms in the BVI. Three weeks after Hurricane Irma struck, the company announced that it had laid off 18 staff members, including three lawyers, due to the impact of the hurricane.

Harneys had stated that all affected staff would receive their full entitlement to any severance pay if they did not return to their former roles.

The company is currently operating from a temporary location because it's original Main Street office was damaged by Hurricane Irma.

A significant number of businesses were impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September. Some have remained closed while others have scaled down operations.

Meanwhile, anxiety keeps rising among employees across the Territory, amid news that a few large companies laid off several workers last week.

The Moorings sent home close to 90 employees while Peter Island Resort and Spa laid off some 200 workers.

Residents fear that more companies will lay off employees in the coming weeks.
