(PLTM) - Cromwell Oliver Hodge and Captain Wendell Parsons were yesterday, December 12, hailed for their sterling contribution to the community, in an investiture ceremony where they were each awarded the BVI Badge of Honour.

The Badge of Honour is bestowed on respectable, law-abiding members, who have made significant contribution to the community.

The awards were presented by Governor Augustus Jaspert, who thanked the recipients for being positive examples for others to follow.

"Our Territory is populated with many individuals who have devoted a great deal of their time and efforts, in contributing to the growth and development of our beautiful Virgin Islands and its people," Governor Jaspert said.

Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith, who also hailed the awardees, mentioned that he knows both recipients personally and attested to their good character and years old dedicated service.

Among other things, Pastor Hodge was awarded for his devotion to the Gospel Ministry where he assisted in the establishment of several missions formed at the Road Town Baptist Church. These include the Long Look Bethany Baptist, now led by Pastor Silas Morton, and Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church, now led by Pastor Melvin Turnbull. He also served as a teacher for some years.

In accepting his award Pastor Hodge thanked the committee for bestowing the award. He added, "When I received the news that I was going to be honored, I actually shed some tears of joy...I am more than elated to receive this badge of honour."

Meanwhile, Wendell W. Parsons first served the Territory as a boat captain when he performed the important role of transporting passengers between the islands. As boat captain, he was commended as one who could be called upon day or night.

Mr. Parsons was also employed by the Government of the Virgin Islands as a Security Officer/Watchman for the then Government building.  This building also housed the old Post Office which Captain Parsons ensured the safe keeping of that property until earlier this year when he retired.

"I am thankful to God that I was able to serve my country over the years in various capacities. Thanks again for this prestigious award," Captain Parsons said.
