(PLTM) - The BVI Autism Centre is getting support for its rebuilding efforts from the Caribbean Disaster Management Agency (CDEMA).

According to the centre, Deputy Director of the Department of Disaster Management, Dr. Evangeline Springer received a cheque for $70,000 from the CDEMA Emergency Assistance Fund yesterday, December 5.

The presentation was made by CDEMA’s Executive Director, Ronald Jackson, at the 10th Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management taking place this week in the Bahamas.

The BVI Autism Centre sustained significant damage during the passage of Hurricane Irma. The entire roof was lost, causing water damage to interior walls, furniture and equipment. The vehicle was also extensively damaged.

The Autism Centre has been providing services to children and adults in the Territory since its inception on October 29, 2012.

It also provided developmental therapy as part of its Early Intervention Programme.

Although some of the centre’s 36 clients are served in their schools or at home, the centre was the hub of all services and included a sensory room, assessment room with one-way viewing mirror and camera, as well as an interactive white board.

Specific services catered to the development of social emotional and cognitive skills as well as provided training for parents, teachers and supporting job placement.
