(PLTM) - Many residents have been seeking answers on how to become a recipient of a shelter box, but only families comprising of 4-6 persons are eligible.

Shelter boxes are provided and installed by the Rotary Clubs, in an effort to assist with temporary housing, as a form of relief for those left in need of housing following the passage of Hurricane Irma.

Mr. Joseph Ryan, Rotary Operations and Logistics Coordinator, said there are several criteria to be met before persons can receive the boxes.

"...It has to be for a family, it cannot be for an individual and that is simply because the tents are designed to fit anywhere from 4-6 people," Ryan said during a press conference held at the BVI FSC conference room yesterday, October, 17.

There are some 23 shelter boxes for Jost Van Dyke (JVD) and Ryan explained that the island's terrain allowed for this.

"When it comes to the shelter boxes, Jost Van Dyke provided for a reasonably easy deployment because of its landscape and terrain. The islands such as Virgin Gorda and Tortola are a bit more densely populated and don’t allow for such a huge deployment," Ryan stated.

He further explained however, that they are now conducting individualized site assessments on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

"...It's to see where shelter boxes can be applicable for three and upwards…As we see those needs arise and as we are invited out to the site assessments, we will ensure they meet the assessment criteria and we will be happy to give a shelter box to anyone," Ryan stated.

He added, "So you may not see a mass deployment of 23 in any one area, but throughout various districts you may see two or three in a district here and there across Tortola and Virgin Gorda, which is what we plan to do with the remaining shelter boxes."

Speaking to the other criteria, Ryan said that the shelter boxes must be set up near homes and not on top of the foundation of houses.

"…To encourage people to get up in the morning and clean up the debris around the house; reconstruct your house; be near your possessions in the night."

Others include access to potable water-dipping water from a bucket or running water; sanitation facilities to use the bathroom, shower; and a clear site to deploy the shelter box with a 20 x 20 space.
