(PLTM) - One local medical expert is warning the BVI to pay close attention to members of the community, who suffer from hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Virginia Rubaine says these two conditions are usually exacerbated by disasters like Hurricane Irma, adding that poor food choices after after a hurricane may worsen the situation.

"...These disasters are never good and now people are not eating as healthy as they normally would. We are eating a lot of tin foods, a lot of bread and other foods that exacerbate these illnesses," Dr. Rubaine explained.

She warned individuals to reduce stress as this worsens diabetes and hypertension.

She also advised that the BVI Health Services Authority will soon be sending primary health care practitioners into the community, to do home visits and assist the most needy persons who have health issues.

Until then, she wants persons to think positively about their circumstances to prevent these conditions or reduce their effects.

"Find small victories to celebrate. We are recovering well. Our banks are functioning and children are back in some kind of formal education setting, so things are a lot better than we think it is. We are still blessed. The little self care things we can do are also really important, like rest, relaxation and meditation," Dr. Rubaine encouraged.
