(PLTM) - Education Minister and Territorial-At-Large Representative, Hon. Myron Walwyn has started a programme geared towards assisting homeowners, already raising some $70,000.00.
Minister Walwyn, who led by example by injecting $10,000.00, said that the initiative is for persons who are in need of assistance in getting their roof and homes back together, following the destruction left by hurricane Irma.
He told BVI Platinum News that after seeing the need of many residents, he contacted several persons who had conducted business with him in the past, to match his $10,000.00 contribution.
Hon. Walwyn said that the initiative has seen a $70,000.00 pledge so far, of which $40,000.00 have already been collected. To this end, Clarence Thomas Limited (CTL) Home Centre will be giving out $1,000 gift cards, redeemable in supplies such as paint, lumber, etc. to persons.
The Minister thanked those who have joined, including Guana Island, Doug Riegels, MarineMaxx, Shan Mohammed of Nagico Insurance, and Hon. Mark Vanterpool of One Mart supermarket.
Since the passage of hurricane Irma, residents have been seeking assistance to repair what is left of their homes, mainly those without insurance coverage.
Government has confirmed that some 22.5 percent of the approximately 30,000 population is displaced.
