(PLTM) - The BVI Airports Authority had plans to resume commercial flights last Monday at the TB Lettsome International Airport; however, Hurricane Maria affected that schedule.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering, said that he cannot state when commercial flights will be operational.

"No commercial flights have been running since Hurricane Irma. We had originally hoped to have had commercial flights operated on Monday of this week, but then Maria intervened. We have suffered some setbacks with Maria, more specifically the fence is down back again and some power issues," he told reporters on Friday, September 22.

The airport has only been facilitating aid flights and evacuations.

"Operations for some flights and chartered flights are taking place...But as I sit here I cannot tell you that it (commercial flights) will happen at a specific time...But we hope that within the coming weeks commercial flights will be operational," Dr. Pickering said.
