(PLTM) - The BVI community is mourning the death of long time radio broadcaster, and owner of ZBVI radio, Meritt Herbert.

Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith said that he is saddened by the news of Herbert's passing, who called the BVI home for many years, having migrated from Nevis.

He said that Herbert's biggest influence was felt in the local media industry through the founding of ZBVI radio, after having successfully founded VON Radio in Nevis.

"Over the years, ZBVI has provided the people of our Territory, and beyond our shores, with diverse signature radio programmes catering to every generation and musical genre. Like me, I'm sure that many of you have your favorite programme that you regularly tune into," he said.

He said Merrit had a keen appreciation for the value of information during important times like hurricanes, special events, House of Assembly meetings, graduations, election coverage and much more.

"He made sure that through ZBVI, we were all kept informed with live coverage and regular updates. I am glad to see that his staff at ZBVI - Zan, Sandra, Beverley, Iris and the rest of the team - are diligently continuing with this particular aspect of his legacy," Premier Smith expressed.

Premier Smith recalled celebrating ZBVI's 50th anniversary with Herbert and his team a few years back.

"That was indeed a trip down memory lane! It is often said that we should give flowers while they can be appreciated, and I know that a few years ago, Merrit was also among those recognised in our community, as an unsung hero by the NLBC, for his exemplary contributions and work in our media industry and all he did to shine the spotlight on the Territory's agricultural sector."

Meritt leaves to mourn to his wife Harriette, and his children.

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture, also extended his condolences to the family of the late Herbert.

He said that, Mr. Herbert was indeed family to all of us in the Virgin Islands and so we share in this loss.

"Meritt was a sterling example of the contributions made to the development of the VI from persons who originated from other Caribbean countries. I grew up hearing Mr. Herbert as the voice of morning devotion and other important programs on ZBVI radio which he owned," Minister Walwyn expressed.

He added, "He was a very astute business man who came from very humble beginnings and made it here in the VI through hard work. This is a major loss for the VI community and indeed the Caribbean community. He was a man who loved excellence and let us endeavor to be excellent citizens in his honor."
