(PLTM) - The government has moved to implement a short term customs relief and remission for certain items, as residents and businesses grapple to recover from Hurricane Irma, which hit the Territory on September 6.

Premier and Finance Minister, Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith made the announcement today, September 22, at a press conference.

"Individuals and businesses are permitted to import supplies to assist in the rebuilding effort. To support this effort, government has decided to waive all taxes for importers bringing in particular supplies until December 21st, 2017."

The supplies are food and water; building material; electrical fixtures and materials; plumbing fixtures and materials; household furniture, furnishings and appliances; pharmaceuticals; generators; and cleaning supplies.

He also said that government has also ordered and received pledges of generators.

"We expect them to be on island within the coming weeks and these generators will be donated to businesses. I have referred to the issue of price gouging before."

The Premier added, "Again, I urge businesses to be reasonable. Now is the time for us to work together as a community. The quicker residents can get back on their feet, the better it is for businesses and our economy."
