(PLTM) - BVI students who sat the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) programme this year, performed well, with 81 percent of students attaining pass marks of Grade 1, 2 or 3.

The Ministry of Education and Culture implemented CAPE in Grade 12 during the 2016/2017 school year.

Of the students writing each subject, there was 100% pass for Communication Studies, 85% for Integrated Mathematics, and a 64% for Biology.

26 students at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) registered for Communication Studies, Integrated Mathematics or Biology. 5 of the 26 students registered for two subjects.

One student, Kelliann Freeman, the 2017 valedictorian of ESHS earned a Grade 1 in two CAPE subjects while Daniella Mourillon and Kairhys Harrigan received Grade 1 in one subject. Gabriella Chichester, Majesty Glasgow and She’yan Hodge earned passes in two CAPE subjects.

"We congratulate these students for their success as our first batch of secondary school CAPE students," said Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture.

Hon. Walwyn said the performance of the students this year, is proof that the students can handle the challenge.

He indicated that, the Ministry increased the bar with the requirements for scholarships being 5 CSEC subjects inclusive of Math and English and at first it seemed like a difficult bar, but for the past three years, students have proved that they can do it.

The Minister went on to comment that they then introduced CAPE at Grade 12 and once again they have stepped up to the plate.

"We are committed to on-going professional development for our teachers which in turn result in our student performance and we are proud of the performance all round," he said.

Hon. Walwyn noted that the government remains committed to ensuring students receive the best education and be prepared for today’s world.

"We call upon parents to do their part to ensure that students realise the importance of receiving CXC certification with regards to furthering their education and seeking employment as we prepare them to be globally competitive."

He said, "What better measure can be used but the performance of our students on the CXC examinations, our regional examination?"
