(PLTM) - It is being reported that the US$2M, that reportedly originated from the British Virgin Islands, and was seized in Trinidad and Tobago back in November 2016, was forfeited to the Trinidad Government.

The forfeiture of the $2M, that was found in two blue-coloured crocus bags, among plywood in a cargo container at the port in Point Lisas last year, was ordered last week.

In making the request for the forfeiture, it was reported that Trinidad’s Customs and Excise Division Comptroller, Glen Singh, applied to the Magistrate’s Court for an order to have the confiscated money forfeited to the State.

It was further stated that Couva Magistrate, Siumongal Ramsaran granted the order after being satisfied that conditions of the forfeiture were met, in accordance with the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The seizing of the cash in 2016 was carried out by detectives from the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB), as well as Customs and Excise officials. Trinidad’s Sunday Newsday paper reported that it allegedly “took officers several hours to check the US currency, which amounted to US$2 million.”

Meanwhile, Trinidad’s Newsday reported, “When the money was seized, it was transported to the Customs and Excise building and placed in a vault. The money was transferred to a vault at the Central Bank following information that criminals were planning a heist on the Customs building.”
