(PLTM) - The Water and Sewerage Department has given early warning, that should adverse weather occur, the public water supply will be interrupted. Therefore, residents were urged to commence water storage.

The department explained that the water interruption is to prevent undue damage to the distribution system, and noted that the step is necessary to also preserve the quality of the water supply.

“To ensure that our water distribution network does not encounter significant water loss due to broken pipes, and to protect the quality of the water we distribute, the department usually closes its reservoirs from distributing to customers whenever weather worsens.”

Additionally, the Water and Sewerage Department disclosed that staff members will not be on hand to fix distribution issues in bad weather.

“Please note that operators would be unable to attend to broken pipes throughout bad weather, hence, the need to close down in the event debris fall on pipes, leading to breakages and water loss.”

As such, residents are being admonished to store water to last for up to three days.

“We are seeking your kind cooperation by requesting that all customers begin to store water that would last up to three days or longer. Also that stored water be properly covered,” the department said.

It was also noted that the proposed water interruption comes on the heels of reconnection works, and the fact that some residents are still without water since the last weather interruption.

“We are aware that to date some customers have not been reconnected back to the system, which is due mainly to significant damages in areas. We apologize for this but can assure you that we have been working steadily and as quickly as possible to restore everyone,” the department added.
