(PLTM) - The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has sought to clarify, that the recent sporadic power outages have not been as a result of problems with the three newly installed Wartsila generators

"Most faults in recent weeks have been caused due to issues with the Transmission and Distribution Network, and have not been a result of problems with the new generators," BVIEC stated last evening, July 17.

The press release came following statements reportedly made by BVIEC Deputy General Manager, Mr. Henry Creque, via television, suggesting that the issues were due to defects with the new generators. However, the corporation sought to explain Mr. Creque's comments.

The release by BVIEC stated that Mr. Creque provided an update to a local television newscast, where he also indicated however, that BVIEC has been experiencing some comparatively minor issues with the three new Wartsila Generators as well.

"The issues, the first of which occurred while the manufacturers were testing the units here in the BVI, are all being urgently addressed under warranty provisions in the contract, and have resulted in many fewer interruptions than those mentioned above."

Speaking in depth to the issue, the corporation stated that the brief power supply interruption in portions of Road Town yesterday, was due to a fault on the Transmission and Distribution System in the area of the Sea View Hotel.

"The outages last week Thursday morning (July 13th) were as a result of lightning strikes interacting with the Transmission and Distribution Network."

It further stated that the outages affecting the eastern side of Tortola and the entire island of Virgin Gorda successively on June 24th to 26th, were as a result of faults on the 34.5 KV overhead transmission line in the Hodges Creek area.

"In recent weeks, the outages which have occurred as a result of the issue mentioned above occurred on Saturday, July 8th, 2017. Otherwise, the corporation has been quite satisfied with the performance of the new generators to date. We sincerely hope that this update provides some degree of clarity," BVIEC stated.

Under the $50M Phase V Power Development Programme, BVIEC promised to have stable power supply.
