Don't Dim Your Light--Althea Scatliffe Sends Off 80

Eighty students of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School will be entering high school in September, following an Exit Ceremony held yesterday, June 28, at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Top student of the class of 2017, Andre Smikle, who managed to maintain a top spot in his classes throughout the years, encouraged his peers to not allow their light to dim, as they prepare to embark on their educational journey.

"This afternoon you are surrounded by stars...My fellow classmates, I encourage you to never allow your light to ever go out. As you embark on your educational journey, be the greatest in all that you do," the Valedictorian said.

He said that they could not have qualified for high school without the support of their teachers, the principal, and their parents. Smikle said God cannot be forgotten.

"I am proud to share this moment with you; we could not have made it here on our own...Thanks to all who assisted us in getting here; our parents, principals and teachers, with their dedication to us."

"All this support has prepared us to take the next step of our educational journey."

Principal of the school, Ms. Marieta Headley, in her message, reminded the students not to stick on this achievement, as it is merely the first step of their educational journey. She told them to deposit now so that there is something to withdraw later on.

(PLTM) - "Do not get me wrong, everyone should celebrate their successes. Success builds confidence and gives one the motivation to continue on and confront new challenges," she said.

She added, "Do not make the mistake of thinking that this success is an end, but rather, see it as the ending of one phase and the beginning of another. Remember, it is only what you put into it you can get out of it."

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture, who gave brief congratulatory remarks, spoke to the two new initiatives---learning hub online and digital textbooks. Minister Walwyn encouraged both parents and students to embrace the initiatives.

The Minister has also encouraged the students to remain focused and remember the values that were instilled in them by their parents. He said that they all possess the ability to do great things, but they must be willing to work hard in order to reap the fruits of their labour.

The keynote speaker was Ms. Simone Martin of class of 1987.

The top ten students were Smikle; second place Amari Blyden; Desarie Maynard; D 'Shaye Phillips; Ajaanii Malone; Kristen Erickson; Brea Brodie; Tierra DaSilva; Mashal Louisy; and Ronald Casear.

A number of awards were also distributed to the students.
