Dr. Antoinette Rock, Principal at the St. Georges Secondary School

(PLTM) - The earlier students leave school, the more time they have to choose their next move, and what they want to do with the rest of their lives. This is the view of Dr. Antoinette Rock, Principal of the St. George's Secondary School.

Speaking with BVI Platinum News, Dr. Rock stressed the importance of students leaving school at an early age, uninhibited by an additional school year.

“I firmly believe that if we give our children that early start, by not having them do the extra year, if they can complete all their CSECs by the time they are 16 or 17, then they have ample time to choose what they want to do for the rest of their lives.”

Dr. Rock noted that an additional school year at the institution is not an option at the moment, highlighting the dynamics of the school.

“By virtue of being a very small school and by virtue of having small classes, our students are able to have very very close teaching and communication. Therefore, they are able to complete their exams within the five years.”

She added, “We do a marvelous job here in preparing the children for the CSEC exams. We have small classes and that enables each student to get one to one attention. Our students here have a great advantage over the other schools. Unless something happens, we will remain with the five year preparation for CSEC.”

She however noted that she is aware of the dynamics of other schools around the Territory, adding that some children may need the additional time.

“I do understand that there will be some children who would need additional time, so I’m not hard and fast in my opinion. I have mixed opinions about it, because some children definitely need it, but so far, we don’t need it here. I do not know what will happen in the future. I’m not saying we won’t ever implement it, but for the time being, we don’t see the need.”
