(PLTM) - Students of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) will see a change in atmosphere in the next school year, as the institution intends to up its efforts to address lingering attitude problems.

Highlighting changes that are expected in the new school year, beginning September 2017, Principal of ESHS, Ms. Sandy Underhill stated that the school and its administrative staff will focus on improvements of fostering a positive culture in discipline.

Over the summer, the staff of ESHS is charged with establishing a sound discipline system for the school, which will in turn shift the school’s course from punitive methods, and reduce the number of suspensions.

“We want a system of behavior change management,” Underhill said.

She added, “This is an effort to modify the behavior of students, through the establishment of intervention methods and behavior education, and to reward positive behavior as a means to encourage students with negative behaviors to strive for excellence. We think this will foster a new positive culture and ethos of our school.”

With this new approach, the school is soliciting the support and assistance of parents and the community, for a successful shift from the traditional approaches of discipline.

Underhill explained, once launched, “Plans include media coverage to explain the system and its expectations and requirements of staff, parents and the community.”
