Outgoing Principal Ms Germaine Scatliffe and Assistant Principal, Mr Clifton Forbes

(PLTM) - Principal of the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies (VISTS), Ms Germaine Scatliffe, who has been instrumental since the setting up of the institution three years ago, will be departing the school.

The announcement came on Friday, June 23, by Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture, who said that she will be overseeing the mathematics portfolio directly in the Ministry.

"Ms. Scatliffe is an excellent school administrator. She is also a mathematician, and at the Ministry of Education, we need someone to oversee the mathematics portfolio for the Territory, and so Ms. Scatliffe will be joining the Ministry of Education to take up those responsibilities," the Minister said.

Ms. Scatliffe is the first principal of the school, which produced the Territory's top student at this year's national exit exams. It was the school’s first graduating class.

"I owe a debt of gratitude to the current school principal, Ms. Scatliffe, who I called out of retirement to start working on the vision we had for this school, and she did a significant amount of work…I want to thank her very much for the excellent job that she has done," Minister Walwyn stated.

The Minister did not indicate who will be replacing Ms. Scatliffe. The Assistant Principal is Mr. Clifton Forbes.

Meanwhile, Ms. Scatliffe thanked Forbes for his support and noted that he was the technical man behind her success at the institution.

Minister Walwyn said that a significant amount of work was done by many persons in the Territory to develop the institution and to put the various course requirements, standards and policies in place, to position the school to carry out its intended mission.

"I called on Mr. Elmore Stoutt, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in education, to be the principal of the old institution while we transitioned to the new institution. He did a marvelous job with those students and provided much guidance to me on what needed to be done," he related.

Minister Walwyn also mentioned that he also called on Dr. Charles Wheatley, who has been an advisor to him since he took up the role of Minister for Education and Culture.

"He also made a significant contribution to what we see today, and he sat as the Chairperson of the TVET Steering Committee that was set up to steer the project," the Minister noted.
