Police Treat Seniors To Bingo Night

A night filled with fun, food and laughter, was experienced by seniors across the Territory, who were treated to a Bingo night last evening, May 25, by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

Out in their numbers, local police officers, police recruits, as well as the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Michael Matthews, all gathered at the Road Town Seniors' Centre, to ensure the seniors had an amazing time.

The event was held to commemorate Senior Citizens' Month, being observed in the Territory this month, May 2017, in addition to the 50th anniversary being celebrated by the force this year.

With each round of games won, persons received special awards, compliments of the local force and businesses within the community.

A wide variety of food and beverages, matched with popular local music, were also provided at the event on behalf of the local force.

(PLTM) - Commissioner of Police, Mr. Matthews told BVI Platinum News that it is imperative for local officers to be immersed into the community and know the persons they serve.

The event was also utilized as a platform to observe the recruits as they interact with civilians.

“This is a community event and it is really important to the force that we involve ourselves in the community. The young recruits, who are doing an intensive training, have just done ten weeks of training and it is very important for them to see what interacting with the community is all about.”

Commissioner Matthews added, “It’s not all about law enforcement, it’s about helping, it’s about interacting and getting to know the people.”

The Commissioner also expressed that these sorts of events should not only be scheduled for special occasions, but rather, as frequent as they can be held.

“It is a very important thing for the community and for us, and I like to think that it demonstrates that our officers, in their own time, like to sit down in the community and get to know persons better.”

He said, “As far as I am concerned, I encourage this.”

The RVIPF will be hosting a bingo night for the seniors in Virgin Gorda on Tuesday at the Catholic Community Centre. Entertainment, food, fun and prizes, including cash prizes, are available for those over the age of 65.
