(PLTM) - Locally owned businesses no longer have an advantage over other businesses in the Virgin Islands, said Mr. Colin O’Neal, adding that it comes down to the quality of the goods or services being offered, in addition to a commendable customer relations exchange.
In a guest appearance on a local television show, the local businessman and attorney-at-law said, “Appealing to the general public to support your business because it’s local, I think is increasingly falling on deaf ears.”
He continued, “…And justifiably so, if you are not providing a good service and at a fair price, I don’t care who you are, you are going to go out of business, because the community will not support you.”
O’Neal also suggested that the younger community lack social skills, work etiquette and diplomacy, adding that the business community should invest in the future workforce. He noted that this investment would improve the quality of businesses around the Territory.
“There is a lot more that businesses can do in terms of improving the scales and attitude of particular young people towards work, and this is something we should do in our own self-interest.”
Simple investments should be made in proper dress code, job interview training, how to act on the job, increasing self-worth, and other minor, but important details, O’Neal highlighted.
“There are small steps that businesses can implement to assist young people who are seeking to enter the job market. It’s not expensive, not hard to do, but to a large degree we have not succeeded in doing it.”
