(PLTM) - Local musicians, singers and poets have joined forces in solidarity with the local police force, and their efforts, to push for a decrease in crime in the British Virgin Islands.
With the support of the Tortola Central Lions Club, the artistes have organised a peace concert dubbed, ‘Stop The Crime’, set to go down on Friday, June 16 at the Pier Park.
The concert will kick off immediately following a ‘Stop The Crime’ march, led by the Mighty Scatliffe Drum Corp, from the roundabout in Road Town, ending at the venue of the concert.
Speaking with lead organizer of the event, Mr. Eustace 'Boss' Freeman, he said the event is an effort to show the community, especially those who have committed crimes or have any intentions to do so, that the occurrence of criminal acts, the number of unsolved crimes and the number of murders still unsolved are unacceptable.
“It is safe to conclude that everyone in the Virgin islands must be concerned about the increased rate of serious crimes throughout the region, and more specifically, right here in the Virgin Islands.”
He stressed, “Five murders in five months is unbelievable.”
The support of the community is critical to ensure the message is received, Boss noted, adding, “If our efforts result in saving one life, it would be a life worth saving.”
The event is also looking to generate funds to invest in conflict resolution seminars for persons in the community, as well as the purchase of surveillance cameras that would be erected in the most vulnerable locations around the Territory.
Boss disclosed that this money would be mostly generated from the selling of t-shirts, that will be on sale prior to the march and the concert at a price of $15.
