(PLTM) - A new merger will see combined efforts to create one major pageant as part of this year’s Emancipation Festival. The Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant Committee today, May 16, announced the merger of three franchises in the Territory---The Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant Committee, The Miss World BVI and Miss Universe BVI. The move will see Janette Brin serving as Chairperson and Damion Grange of the Miss World BVI serving as Co-Chairperson of the merged pageant committee. Mrs. Alecia Hamm of Ms. Universe BVI will assist in the preparation of the queen for the Ms. Universe Pageant. Meanwhile, it is being circulated that a total of eight girls will compete for the 2017 title of Miss British Virgin Islands. The increase in contestants was identified to be a result of the combined efforts, to host one show. Speaking with Mr. Damion Grange, the new Co-Chair of the national pageant, he noted that their may be some truth to this rumour. “There may be some truth to it. You just have to come to the reveal to see.” He added, “Until you get to the actual event, that is when you will really know the amount of girls really serious to go forward.” The contestants will be unveiled this coming Sunday, May 21st at 4:00 pm at the Tortola Pier Park. The ceremony will be hosted by the reigning Miss BVI, Erika Creque and the reigning Miss World BVI, Kadia Turnbull. On the merger, Grange said it will see the strengthening of the pageant and pageantry in the Territory, along with greater opportunities for advancement for the contestants. “The idea behind it is how can we optimize the opportunities for the young ladies. When you’re in a small economy, you’re competing for the same sponsors, which makes it challenging, especially when persons have already organized their sponsorship budget. It is to ensure that we are able to provide the best opportunities for the young ladies, and also to ensure the sustainability and raising the standard of pageantry in the BVI.” Janette Brin, Co-Chair of the event said, “We are very excited about the merge and the increased opportunity that participating young ladies now have as a result. Our competition continues to celebrate women from across the Territory, who we hope to inspire to step out of their comfort zones and experience the amazing opportunities that the pageant offers. Last year we introduced our slogan, the Evolution of Pride, Beauty, and Culture as part of our mission to build on the legacy of Miss British Virgin Islands. And this year, we seek to further define the title through the philanthropic efforts of Beauty with a Purpose”. The winner of this year’s pageant will represent the BVI at the Miss Universe and the Miss World Pageants. Among the many prizes, the winner will be capped with a custom made Mi Amor crown, made of crystals and Larimar gemstones, set in sterling silver and white gold. She will also receive a custom made BVI Jade stone ring from Samarkand, a $30,000 educational grant from the Ministry of Education, a brand new 2017 Toyota Yaris, five thousand dollars ($5,000) cash, a Larimar Jewellery set from Mi Amor Jewellers, and other amazing prizes. 1st runner-up will walk away with a BVI Jade stone ring from Samaarkan, a $10,000 educational grant from the Ministry of Education, four thousand dollars ($4,000) cash and other amazing prizes. 2nd runner-up will walk away with two thousand dollar ($2,000) cash and other amazing prizes. On July 1, the committee will host a swimwear competition followed by a crown reception on July 20. Final show night will be August 6th at the Multipurpose Sports Complex. The committee is inviting the entire public to come out in support of this year’s contestants as they embark on their historic journey.
