(PLTM) - Twenty-seven (27) young athletes departed the Territory today, April 13, to represent the BVI at the 46th Carifta Games in Curacao. The delegation left on BVI Airways.
Sports Minister, Hon. Myron Walwyn was on hand to wish the athletes good luck.
"This is indeed a large contingent of young people that qualified to represent our country at the Carifta Games. I am confident that they will do us proud," he told BVI Platinum News.
He said, "I thank all the coaches, the officials from BVI Athletics Association, the Olympic Committee and all other persons responsible for the positive development of these young people in track and field."
This is the largest delegation to ever represent the Territory at the Carifta Games, and any other sporting event.
The athletes are, for the girls, Beyonce Defreitas, Zakharia Frett, Zara Brown, Arianna Hayde, Xiomara Malone, Tashira Edwards, Akrisa Eristee, Mariah Christian, L’T’sha Fahie, Shaniyah Caul, Akirah Phillip, Kala Penn, Sh'Kaida Lavacia and Judine Lacey. The boys on the team are Rikkoi Brathwaite, Samuel Romney, Johnt’a Charles, K’cei Moses, Deron Leslie, Djimon Gumbs, D’andre Mitcham, Jelani Norman, Joshua Hill, Diamonte Gumbs, Rackeel Jack, Malik John and Gevon Smith.
The games will kick off on Saturday, April 15.
