Contestants from the 2016 Miss BVI pageant

(PLTM) - Things are not going too well for the Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant Committee, as they continue scrabbling the Territory for contestants, with little luck.

Speaking with Ms. Janette Brin, chairperson of the pageant committee, she shared that the committee is experiencing difficulties finding contenders for the title.

“Things are not going as well as we had planned. It’s like one day we have contestants and the next day we don’t.”

As a result, the committee was forced to extend their January 20th deadline, with hopes that hopefuls across the Territory will step up and come forward.

She explained that the application period will stay open, “up until we get young ladies. We don’t want it to go past June 1 and we don’t have contestants.”

BVI Platinum News understands that a mere three girls have already completed applications, signifying their interest in the pageant. However, Ms. Brin noted that the registrants are not definite contestants, but rather ladies who are interested at the moment.

She also added that the committee is looking for at least six girls this year.

Encouraging more girls to apply, she said, “Ideally, for the young ladies, the earlier they decide, the earlier they can start to prepare and the more successful they will be. I’m really appealing to the young ladies to come forward, find their confidence. They must be reminded that they are the only ones keeping them back."

Delving into the issue of why ladies are so reluctant to apply, Ms. Brin stated that it might have a lot to do with the community and its negativity.

“We get the sense that because of how negative people can be in our community, there are a lot of young ladies who want to do it and then they get intimidated.”

She stated that this is the time for girls to take a chance and capitalize on the incentives from the pageant.

“The committee is committed to assisting them in various aspects---walking, public speaking, confidence building. There are ladies who want to do it and do it for themselves, their development and the prizes that come with it, like the education grants, the $10,000 cash prize and other perks, and to be an ambassador for their country. The committee has already started its part, we just need the young ladies to come and do their part.”

In the meantime, the committee continues to educate younger girls about pageantry, confidence and poise, in an effort to secure contestants easily in the future.
