(PLTM) - Alleged defiance and lack of respect led one man to a near death experience when he was chased by another, who was wielding a chopping knife.

Lon Wells, 26, a national of Grenada is currently facing charges of being armed with an offensive weapon, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage, stemming from the incident that occurred on September 13, 2016 in Horsepath.

In an appearance at the Magistrate’s Court on March 24, Wells pleaded guilty to all three charges.

In mitigation, the accused told the court that his actions were driven by the need to protect his 15 year-old step daughter.

He explained that after being disrespected in his own home by his daughter's boyfriend, in addition to the illegal factors of the relationship between the two—his step daughter and her boyfriend, he requested that the man not visit his property.

The accused stated that having arrived home on September 13th, he saw the accused in his home. Wells asked him to leave immediately, however the man allegedly watched him and laughed.

“It triggered me your honor,” Wells told the court, adding “I know what I did was wrong.”

According to further details of the matter made available by the crown, as a result of ignoring the request, the accused allegedly grabbed him by the throat and a struggle ensued.

The court heard that both fell to the ground, resulting in the complainant cutting his hand on a broken piece of bottle.

The two were separated by the wife of the accused and her daughter, the girlfriend of the complainant.

It was noted that Wells then retrieved a chopping knife from inside his home and advanced towards the complainant, who managed to flee the scene.

Wells then allegedly approached the vehicle left behind by the complainant and damaged both side mirrors.

Under police questioning, Wells stated that he informed the complainant to stay away from his premises. He also admitted to choking and damaging the property of the complainant.

His bail was set at $20,000 and is ordered to attend anger counselling at the Family Support Network.

Wells will make another appearance on June 23 to report on his progress in counselling.
