The Seventh-Day Adventist School's (SDA) senior rugby team emerged as champions of this year’s 2017 Under 17 School Rugby Tournament, after defeating the team from the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies, two nil.
The game ended this year’s BVI Rugby Union's (BVIRU) Schools Festival, which saw a total of 4 teams from four high schools going head to head in the games over last weekend. The other teams were Elmore Stoutt High School and the St. George's High School.
Commenting on SDA’s win, local Rugby Development Coach, Sherlock Solomon said, “SDA has been dominating local schools rugby and it wasn’t a surprise that they won all their games today and were crowned champions.”
He said, “It is the first season in rugby for the VISTS team, and they are a young bunch who will progress in time. But even so, they gave SDA a good run for their money,”
Solomon also made note that the day posed as a great opportunity for the local union to spot talent and build on the pool of players who are capable of representing the BVI Rugby Union at regional tournaments.
“We have lost a couple of guys from the U19’s and today showed there is a good bunch available to me, so I hope to get them all together on the same pitch at the same time and prepare for tournaments in the Caribbean.”
The semi-finals saw SDA defeat Elmore Stoutt High with 4-2, while the VI School of Technical Studies outplayed St. Georges High with 2-1.
