(PLTM) - Backpacks of students across the Territory will soon be lightened, following the launch of an initiative by the Ministry of Education where every student will receive a digital textbook device.

Following discussions during the recently held Standing Finance Committee deliberations, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Marcia Potter disclosed that the initiative is fueled by the numerous complaints received from both parents and students over the heavy bags the students are forced to lift, hurting their back.

Dr. Potter noted that these devices will have all the relevant textbooks stored on them, eliminating the need for physical and heavy copies.

She further noted that a similar device will be made available for teachers, that would synchronize with the students’ devices, making teaching in the classroom much easier.

This initiative also gained the support of other representatives, who noted that they have also received complaints from students and parents as to the increasing prices of textbooks.

Minister of Education, Hon. Myron Walwyn commented that the device is indeed an amazing idea, adding that he is very pleased with the initiative, particularly because of the rising cost of textbooks.
