(PLTM) - Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) renamed its Tortola base in memory of the late Mrs. Elisabeth Ann Harris on February 18, and to mark the occasion her husband, Mr. Roger Harris donated $100,000 towards kick starting the funding of two new rescue vessels.

Mr. Harris and his late wife have been strong supporters of VISAR since it formed in 1988.

“Our boats need to be strong, reliable, easy to maintain and not fail when the call comes. We want all those in the BVI that work, play, visit or live on the water to have access to world class marine emergency services," commented Mr. Gerard Kraakman, VISAR President.

According to VISAR, along with its fully trained volunteer crew, VISAR’s vessels are the number one tool they have for saving lives at sea.

VISAR is aiming to have the new vessels on island in 2018.

In 2016, VISAR launched their boats 82 times and spent 135 hours responding to marine emergencies. Last year, their fully trained volunteer crew, trainees and coordinators gave up over 2200 hours of their personal time to train, attend meetings and dedicate themselves to saving lives at sea.

Since formation, VISAR has carried out over 1,300 search and rescue missions.

"The funding of two new rescue vessels will be VISAR’s main focus in 2017. VISAR will also be launching a safety at sea campaign, working with the charter boat industry to raise awareness of some of the common accidents and emergencies we are called to in the BVI waters and how to minimize risks," VISAR stated.

According to VISAR, its 100% volunteer crew and coordinators are ready to accept the call that could save someone’s life and 45 crew members are standing by to respond.

"Search and Rescue can be difficult and dangerous. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, including: accountants, hospitality, marine, IT, lawyers, engineers and architects. A range of corporate membership levels offering brand exposure benefits are available to support life changing search and rescue response," VISAR stated.

Other speakers at the event included Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith, Governor John Duncan, Father David Stedman, Mr. Harris and the Harris' daughter, Susan Keely.
