(PLTM) - Sports Minister, Hon. Myron Walwyn has congratulated Virgin Islander, Mr. Darel Christopher Jr., who has become the Territory’s first International Professional Cyclist.

Christopher’s license was sanctioned by the International Cycling Union.

As reported earlier in the week by BVI Platinum News, following the end of the 2016 USA cycling season, Christopher Jr. was recognized for his hard work and dedication to the discipline, by being upgraded to the status of International Professional Cyclist by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

This accomplishment now affords Christopher the opportunity to compete in a number of UCI sanctioned races in the US and around the world.

Minister Walwyn said he is very proud of Christopher's achievements.

“It seems that even before he could walk, he could cycle and became a formidable cyclist here in the Virgin Islands, winning numerous cycling competitions,” the Minister said on Friday, February 17.

“It shows that hard work, perseverance and remaining focused on the target will bring personal and international rewards.”

The Minister extended best wishes and continued success to Christopher Jr. as he embarks on this new chapter of his career, and also extended congratulations to his parents on the milestone achievement.

“I am encouraging all the BVI Cycling Associations and all the coaches and trainers to continue developing the Territory’s young cyclists. The Ministry of Education and Culture will continue to support cycling and all our athletes,” the Minister stated.

Christopher Jr. has long been known for being a Virgin Islands cycling champion, having won several local races over the years.

He has represented the Territory at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico and at the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships and the Caribbean Senior Cycling Championships.

Coming up later this month, from February 26, Christopher will experience his first international cycling event when he joins team Crescent out of the USA to compete in the Vuelta Ciclista Independencia Republica Dominicana 2017 – UCI Tour Class 2.2 in the Dominican Republic.

The event is an eight-stage event that will host 160 participants from many different countries, several of whom have competed in the international arena.
