(PLTM) - 19 year-old Omarie Winter, a BVIslander, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful possession of explosives and a firearm.

Winter pleaded to the charges in an appearance yesterday, February 1st before the Magistrate's Court.

The charges stem from an early morning search operation conducted by police on a home in Nibbs Estate on January 31.

According to police, the search yielded a loaded magazine and a 45mm handgun.

Four other persons who were arrested with Winter, two men and two women, were released.

Winter will make another appearance at the Magistrate’s Court on February 10.

Following this arrest, Commissioner of Police Michael, Mr. Matthews said he is delighted when operations by his officers result in this kind of success.

He further reassured the community that operations of this nature are not new to the force, noting that not all of them are reported, as not all result in successful finds.

“…But we persevere nevertheless. In today’s operation, not only were we able to remove yet another illegal firearm from our streets, but charges were laid in the matter," the Commissioner said.

He added, "I consider this a success not only for my officers, but for the people who count on us to keep our communities safe.”
