(PLTM) - Opposition Leader, Hon. Julian Fraser believes that the airport expansion project is needed, but given the financial position of the Territory, the BVI is not in a position to start a $153.5M project. Government has selected China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) as the preferred bidder to expand the TB Lettsome International Airport at Beef Island. "I wouldn't say that the time is wrong; it's just that we are not in the position at this particular time base on the management of our finances. But I think I see the airport project to be a marketing strategy. It is one that I think that is usual," Hon. Fraser said. Hon. Fraser expressed his views on the importance of an expanded airport, to allow for direct flights, given the recent developments in the financial services industry, including the establishment of an International Arbitration Centre. "When the Premier travels as he did in October in the far East, he spent quite a while there, so he met quite a few people talking about the BVI as a financial centre. He can then be able to tell them that they can come here directly. And I think from a marketing standpoint, telling your potential clients that they can get to the BVI direct (good marketing tool)." He said, "We have a Commercial Court, International Arbitration Centre, all these facilities are to be used by the international communities." However, the Opposition Leader said there might be some skepticism from the travelers. "I am not too sure the folks are going to come direct; once they start booking their flights direct they are going to realize that maybe coming through St. Thomas is more attractive, or through Puerto Rico, because they can access more United States cities than they would flying direct to the BVI," Hon. Fraser stated. Extension of the runway from 4645 feet to about 7100 feet will allow current airline fleets (737-800 and Airbus 320) to fly directly to and from continental US and Latin America.
