(PLTM) - Making an important note at a recent regional teleconferencing meeting hosted in the British Virgin Islands, Minister of Education, Hon. Myron Walwyn stated that it is more valuable and wiser for the society and students to invest in a particular career, rather than them obtaining unnecessary qualifications.

The Minister was at the time addressing the point of numerous students across the Caribbean sitting up to 20 CXC subjects.

Minister Walwyn informed educational leaders of member states within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), that much attention is needed on what the students are engaged in while in school, and the number of subjects they are challenge themselves with.

The Minister stated, “I think what’s missing is more of career guidance, and at a very early stage as well, to find out what they [students] want to do as a career path.”

He continued, “And if that guidance is given early enough, then we would find students doing subjects and engaged in things that fit the path of their preferred career.”

Career guidance for students is an issue currently being attended to within the Territory, with assistance from guidance counselors based at the schools, according to the Minister.

“What we don’t want is for persons to have qualifications for the sake of having them. People are now beginning to question their return in investment from education.”

Minister Walwyn added that they have to reach as many students as they can.

"There are a number of reasons why a great percentage of students fall behind. It’s up to us as educators to look at their personal circumstances, look at how they learn, as well and try to diversify learning through professional development for teachers and devising policies that somewhat ensure the success of the students," he indicated.
