Update: Stepping Out Of My Father's Shadow

Newly crowned queen of the Elmore Stoutt High School, Mya Walwyn, 17, is on a mission to live life outside of her father's shadow, hoping that persons will now see her for who she is, her talents and what she has to offer.

“People will no longer see me as Myron Walwyn’s daughter, but see him as Mya Walwyn’s father," Mya noted in her opening speech.

Daughter of the Education Minister was crowned last evening, January 21, along with Calden James as the new Mr. and Miss ESHS at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

(PLTM) - An overjoyed Mya told BVI Platinum News that the experience, which she deems a great one, was the first and last pageant for her.

“I am content with my win. I refuse to live again going through sleepless nights.”

Always living in her father’s shadow, she stated that this pageant was an avenue to branch out.

“I can’t do what he [Hon. Myron Walwyn] does, but I feel like I’m closer to being out of his shadow.”

Mya stated that her journey through the pageant was not an easy one, as naysayers began to point out that her winning the crown will be because who her father is.

“Being in the pageant I was taught, don’t care what anyone wants to say, just push forward. I did it; after all the hard work and tears, I did it.”

She took time out to thank her father for his support. “He told me, whatever happens, win or lose, just do my best.”

King, Calden James, dedicated his performance and winning title to his grandmother, who recently passed.

The 18 year old expressed that he enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to give back to his school.

While performing his talent, James sent a strong message to the government of the Virgin Islands, highlighting that the teachers are performing without adequate supplies.

During the performance, he gifted the school an air conditioning unit, flat screen tv, printing paper and an office chair.

“I wanted to give back to the school to show them that the seniors still care. My message was not in a disrespectful way, but it was a message to make them [government] concerned about what is going on.”

Other placements in the show went to Kayla Grant, first runner up and Jerely Jean Jacque, second runner up.
