(PLTM) - Students at the Francis Lettsome Primary School (FLPS) have read over 1600 books as part of the annual ‘Winners Read, Readers Win’ Reading Challenge.

The contest was sponsored by Harneys and students were challenged to read at least ten age-appropriate fiction or non-fiction books within a five-week period. The school surpassed last year’s reading record of 110 students and 1,371 books.

According to the Education Ministry, 146 students competed and collectively read 1,657 books during the competition designed to encourage students to read for pleasure. Students were then required to complete a book report for each book read and reports were reviewed by their classroom teachers.

83 students read more than 10 books and received prizes at a prize-giving ceremony on the school grounds on December 2.

The top readers are Jalen Herman of Grade 1, Angelica Budhu of Grade 2, Trevika Chalwell of Grade 3, D’Moi Wharton of Grade 4, Jahnare Farrington of Grade 5, Kishelle John and Jaynay Thomas of Grade 6.

Acting Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Connie George said the Ministry of Education and Culture was thankful to Harneys for continuing to support the school in this annual competition that promotes literacy.

“This is a meaningful partnership that will benefit the entire community. This school year, the Ministry is sending the message that we want students to improve their reading and so have been encouraging principals to build even stronger reading programmes in the schools," she stated.

Harneys Marketing Manager, Mrs. Shonda Leacock said, “The students are so keen to participate in this competition each year and are truly developing a real love of books and reading for pleasure. We are truly happy to be a part of this amazing partnership which allows us the opportunity to see first-hand the dedication of the principal, teachers and students at FLPS.”

The winning house, Cougars, also received a certificate for reading 603 books, while Grade 6 won a pizza party as a result of reading 304 books.
