(PLTM) - After being put out of an apartment owned by his mother, Rosa Smith, the accused Lorne David allegedly threatened to kill her and her husband, Carlton Smith, and destroy their property. David pleaded not guilty to the offences of threatening language and criminal damage in an earlier appearance. As a witness on the crown’s behalf, Mrs. Smith informed the court that she had initially gave permission to her son to stay in the Belle Vue apartment along with his family. Shortly after, as a result of questioning David over some money he had owed her, the court heard he became irate and began to argue. It was after this point the accused received several letters, instructing that he should vacate the premises, to which he refused and continued occupying the apartment. Mrs. Smith explained to the court that the house in which the apartment is situated was in the process of being demolished. Having conducted a search on the premises while the accused was away, Mrs. Smith and her husband discovered that he had been stealing electricity from the nearby school. This, she explained, was as a result of the house not having any access to electricity. The couple unplugged the connecting cord. When this was discovered, the court heard that the accused became upset and began destroying the doors and the windows of the apartment. Subsequently, he began threatening to kill his mother and her husband. The mother explained to the court that as a result of his death threats, she has experienced sleepless nights and stress. She noted that for some time, she was afraid to go out late in the evenings. In cross examination, the accused noted that he was mad at seeing all his belongings on the outside of the apartment when he returned home, but noted he never threatened her. He informed the court that it was the husband who damaged the door and the window, and the husband was the one who told her the story she narrated. Mr. Smith also served as a witness in the matter, to which he denounced the accused accusations of him destroying his own property. The trial continues on March 23, 2017.
