(PLTM) - Persons in the British Virgin Islands are encouraged to enhance their personal hygiene regime, specifically the washing of hands as the possibility of contracting the Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) virus is very real.

EKC, also known as pink eye, is a viral infection of the eye that can possibly cause corneal scaring. The virus is said to affect children more than adults.

The highly contagious virus has been identified in the neighbouring island of St. Thomas, where officials have disclosed that over 30 patients have been diagnosed.

Speaking with BVI Platinum News, Medical Doctor within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ronald Georges noted that the virus is one that should be of concern to persons of the BVI.

“I wouldn’t go as far as to say it is a major public health issue, but persons should be concerned. It is something we need to be aware of. Schools and daycares are places that would be more of concern with this virus.”

Persons are asked to wash their hands consistently, as it is easily passed on to others. Persons who are affected by the virus are usually quarantined to eliminate the possibility of it being spread.

“Hygiene is important in combatting the virus. If you have a problem with your eyes, go and see a doctor, because it might not be what you think it is. So the doctor needs to take a look at it and prescribe whatever medication,” Dr. Georges noted.

He added, “EKC is something that happens from time to time. The concern here is with any long lasting damage, like scaring to the corneas. It is a possible, but rare complication.”

The symptoms of EKC which can occur in one or both eyes include redness, irritation, itchiness, swelling of the eyelids, eye pain and blurred vision, among others.

Persons who contract the virus should:

• Avoid touching their eyes whenever possible. If they do touch their eyes, hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and running water. • Avoid touching other people unless hands are freshly washed. • Avoid hugging or kissing with close face to face contact during an EKC outbreak. • Dispose of or carefully wash items (hot water and detergent) that touch their eyes. • Do not share eye makeup or other items used on the eyes. (e.g., towels, tissues, eye drops, eye medications) • Use a separate towel and face cloth for each member of the household. • Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. • Use disposable tissues to blow nose, sneeze or cough.
