(PLTM) - Vernon Campbell, 21, of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was fined $2000 after pleading guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to his 31 year-old girlfriend. Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards handed down this sentence when the accused made an appearance before the Magistrate’s Court earlier today, October 17. Campbell also pleaded guilty to the offence of common assault, to which the court noted that he was convicted, reprimanded and discharged. Campbell, who arrived in the Territory on September 27, came to visit his girlfriend for a month, when both incidents occurred.

According to the particulars of the matter, on September 30th 2016, both the accused and the complainant [girlfriend] were taken to the East End Police Station for questioning regarding an altercation at their Paraquita Bay residence. After resolving the issue, Campbell opted to stay in a hotel that night and was escorted by officers back to the apartment to collect his belongings. The accused left the police vehicle and headed to the apartment, but soon returned after realizing he was without a key to give him access. The court heard that the accused went to the door of the vehicle where the complainant was sitting, opened it and demanded the key to open the door. She refused and he began beating on her. Allegedly, Campbell pounced into the vehicle, pushing the accused downwards and struck her several times with his fists. Officers' attempts to restrain Campbell were unsuccessful and they resorted to tasing him. He was then handcuffed and arrested. The complainant was said to have suffered injuries to her head, right eye and upper body.
