(PLTM) - Parents of the young footballers participating in the 2016-2017 BDO Primary and Secondary School Football League are encouraged to attend the games and support the athletes. The league officially began yesterday, October 12, with a march of the teams at the A. O. Shirley Recreational Grounds. A whopping 52 teams are set to go head to head in this year's tournament. Ryan Geluk, Director of Technology Risk at BDO, title sponsor of the event, noted that the parents are a fundamental part of the experience for the youths and they need to be present. “We see them dropping the players off then leave. No, stay behind and watch your children play. You’ll be proud of what they are achieving and what they are accomplishing, and how much they are growing in the sport.” He added, “It’s about having fun. Yes, winning is important, but seeing all the children have a chance to play, smiles on their faces and proper sportsmanship, that’s what it’s all about. It’s important that you do show your support to the league and the kids.” President of the BVI Football Association, Andy Bickerton also spoke to the matter. “It is really important for parents to show their children that they are interested in what they are doing and to be there to support them. You do need to realize that they can’t win every game, but do be there to support the athletes.” The first game of the league followed the opening march with the Begrado Flax team versus Elmore Stoutt for the Principal’s Cup. The league will run right through the next couple of months until February 2017.
